Food waste is a huge part of the restaurant industry, and that includes food waste from campus cafes. If we could create a composting program to separate food waste, save it and turn it into compost for the community garden. This would help reduce food waste and directly support the Mohawk community garden, which would help pollinators! Part of this compost campaign would include information posters (on recycled paper!) and more green bins that we can ask the city to provide. Either there could be green bins in common spaces with students composting leftover food, or even food they don\t finish from packed lunches. Or the green bins could be solely at the cafe/restaurant locations and would be up to the staff to ensure proper disposal of any food waste and save for compost. Food waste would be stored outdoors near the community garden in compost bins. This is also a great educational opportunity to increase student awareness around the benefits of composting. This would cut down on food waste going to landfills and directly support the community garden by providing nutrient rich compost.
